Mark McGarry Obituary

Mark Rutledge McGarry,Jr, 85, died peacefully on Feb. 16, 2015 in St. Petersburg, Florida surrounded by his loving family. Known by many as "The Judge" he served as a Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court Judge for 24 years. The ultimate sportsman who was a scratch golfer, a badminton champion, rode motorcycles, marksman, canoed and kayaked, skied, biked, ice skated, sailed his Hobie Cat, and flew his own plane. He also played the guitar and piano. For the past 23 years he spent most of his time at his home in Durango, Colorado which he designed himself. There he taught badminton at Ft. Lewis College, joined a local motorcycle club, and was the first Club Champion at the Dalton Ranch Golf Club in 1994. He graduated from the University of Virginia where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He received his law degree from the University of Florida in 1955, returning to St. Petersburg to practice law, and was elected circuit judge in 1966. His years on the bench were filled with good humor and camaraderie among his cohorts, resulting in his publishing a book of cartoons poking gentle humor at attorneys and judges. In addition to his wife of 62 years, Norma Jean (Goodman), he is survived by sons Mark III (Susie), and Brian (Aurea), and grandchildren Patrick, Alyssa and Angelica. Services will be Saturday, Feb.28, at 10 a.m in St. Petersburg at Anderson McQueen, 2201 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the YMCA, 600 – 1st Ave. N., St. Petersburg, FL 33701. Online donations can be made at www.memorial-donations.org. Judge McGarry was fun, hard-working, and he knew the law. He was fair and long-suffering in listening to every fact presented to him. My experience practicing law was greatly enhanced by Judge McGarry's patience and attention to details. He is and will always be a great man. RIP Cora Kent

Hi Norma Jean, Thinking about you a lot in the past several days. The Judge was such a big part of the establishment and overall success of the Dalton Ranch. I used to love to watch his eyes light up when he made that winning putt whether it be in a tournament or in a friendly $1.00 game. In the summer of 2013, I was out on the range obviously struggling with my game. The Judge was sitting on a bench at the other end of the range watching one of his buddies hit some balls.......the Judge ambled down my way and said "Fal-Z, you are a little quick at the top, slow it down!!" I did, and it worked! I will always have wonderful memories of the Judge. I know he was not feeling well the past couple of years, and now I hope he will rest in peace. He was a GREAT MAN!!................Fal Wood

What a wonderful man! Enjoyed so many stimulating and challenging conversations with Mark; as well as golf rounds of the same nature. Including the drubbings in early Dalton Ranch Club Championships.
Always a warm smile with perhaps a friendly needle to follow. My sincere condolences to Norma Jean and the entire family. He will always be remembered.

Dennis & I were so sad to read in the Herald that Mark passed away. What a great and sweet
man he was. We were proud to have met you both, Norma Jean. Dennis loved riding his motorcycle with Mark. He always had great stories to tell keeping the group entertained. You & your family are in our thoughts & prayers. Love, Dennis and Jackie Williamson
