I have been reinforced in my faith by the words spoken and sung at the funeral of your husband, father and grandfather. Your choices so strongly reflect the choices made by my own parents as I grew up in the church. I always thought of him as a great example of a good man holding to his convictions in a world of self serving politicians. Now I know that was just who he was in all aspects of life. What a blessing his life has been to us all. We need to follow his example. Thank you for sharing his service with us. I hope by doing so, it was not too hard on your family. God bless.

Such an amazing individual. I briefly met General Powell while on my first exercise deployment as a very new 2nd Lieutenant. My unit was providing communication support at the Boy Scout Jamboree at Camp AP Hill and General Powell attended the event for a period of time. During his visit he came by to meet with the Army units providing on-site support. When he was visiting our site I asked if he would participate in the promotion for two of my lower enlisted soldiers and he immediately agreed. The next day he came back to our site during the promotion ceremony and pinned the new rank onto the collar for both soldiers. I could tell by the expressions on the soldiers faces that they were amazed that such a well-known general officer would participate in the ceremony of two soldiers that he had just met the prior day. This event was something I knew the soldiers would remember throughout their careers and something that I clearly remember and appreciate twenty years later.

He never knew me but I certainly knew him. Perhaps vicariously or not. I served as a VISTA Volunteer from 1967-1969 and lived and trained in the SE Bronx. I lived with the wonderful Petres family on 160th Street jus down from the Prospect Avenue train station.
I was a tenant organizer focused of housing violations. Our focus was Kelly Street. The conditions were deplorable in many instances as much as the residents tried to improve those living conditions. Rent strikes, court appearances at the Grand Concourse yielded minor and frustrating victories. No wonder people were demoralized. It took well over 20 years after I departed in the latter part of 1967 that just 3 buildings were improved to sustain respectable human habitation. Little did I know that "Banana Kelly" as it was called was the boyhood neighborhood of one Colin Powell, one of the most honorable and moral members of our American society for whom I admired as he gained notoriety from his leadership of our military most notably in Desert Storm. Once I learned of his Kelly Street upbringing at an early age I felt a closeness to him for decades. Of course, I was a ghost to him but he was very much a part of my being through my now 77th year. I so wanted to meet him and came close just once when he shared the stage in Tucson at UA with the likes of Terry Bradshaw and at that time, America´s mayor, Rudy Giuliani. Then, truth was truth and from that day to this, General Powell never wavered. From "Banana Kelly" to the Joint Chiefs to State, he served his country with honor and dignity. He inspired me during my 42+ years of public service to treat people, including those with whom I disagree on many levels, with respect. He lived by example - a loss in our present day social decay. I pray for his soul, thank him for his character that we ALL should emulate and for his leadership that helped me be the best I could be.
To his family I say THANK YOU for sacrificing him for the betterment of our country. I weep with you and I also rejoice in the fact a great man walked among us. God rest his soul. He didn´t know me but I knew him! I loved him!

My heart goes out to the Powell family. General Powell was a gift to the world. My wife and I met him in the 90's and I asked if he could assist with a nonprofit that I founded and after I explained that I was an elected official and was trying to get young black men and women a resume for employment and get them off the street, he unexpectedly said yes. I appreciate the advice and I did get to tell him how much he meant to me. He can rest now that he kept the world safe.

The starting point*
(in memory of General Colin Powell, 1937-2021,
Former Secretary of State of the USA)
by Ruth Esther Gilmore
under the apple tree where the sky
is fragrant with long-forgotten words
a strange vision meets my eyes
history and future in purple coats
of flying spirals
humans with open minds
open ears and gentle souls
to them I sigh
about this world
down goes the beauty
down goes my fragile future
I will curl into cold ferns
and strive to hide
in toothless darkness
to which the wheel replies
look into the past
look at what triumphs
what pains
what failures have occurred
what fights have been fought
steps have been carved into words
formed into bricks
flown into ink
lasting steps for you to take
fast steps to climb to higher pinnacles
now it is your turn to build
a bridge of hope for the future
to be a burning flame
a flaming wick
my heart overruns a few beats
my soul finds a winging paradise
I reply how will I know
if my bridge and laid-down staircases
will lead me to a new world
they answer
the world is not for you alone
you are building and erecting
new ways for those coming
for those unnamed
unborn
unseen
unknown
for those you renew and create new worlds
just as those before you
renewed and created
and formed new worlds for you
something comes from something
actions pave the way for actions
darkness brings
the breaking of a morning day
darkness brings the breaking
of a morning day

35 yrs. ago in 1986 l was sent to my 1st overseas assignment in Germany in 5th Corp. I didn't know what to think of the new patch on my left shoulder, lt looked like the Chrysler emblem. I learned that my Corp. Commander was a 3 star General named Colin Powell, l didn't have the honor in meeting LTG Powell as he left Germany in 1987, l saw that he was becoming a important figure in our capital, first as national security advisor to President Reagan, and then he received his 4th star and became a part of my chain of command once more as the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff under President Bush, l was in awe of Gen. Powell, he was the best and l know l can speak for all of the soldiers that served under him that we respected him for all he did in service to our country. A little more than 45 years ago I reported in to 2nd Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division. As a reasonably well seasoned, 30 year old Captain, I was surprised to meet my 39 year old full Colonel Brigade Commander, Colin Powell. As impressed as I was with the speed with which he had advanced in rank, I was also overwhelmed with his demeaner. He told me he was genuinely happy to have me in his command and that the Brigade was going to be doing great things for our Army. I knew after 5 minutes that I was in the presence of someone so special that he could very possibly change the military and possibly even the Country as we then knew it. There was an aura of greatness about him even then and it never diminished in my eyes. He treated everyone with such respect and consideration that we, as subordinate officers, were not worried when the Colonel visited our unit; we looked forward to it. He was an inspiration to so many of us who served in Viet Nam and were disillusioned by how it ended.
As special as he always was he had an equally special partner beside him. The ever gracious and elegant Mrs. Alma Powell was and is every bit as impressive as General was. Her kindness and consideration for others and her amazing memory for faces and names totally astounded those of us who had the honor of her acquaintance.
To Mrs. Powell and their children and grandchildren I offer my most sincere condolences and prayers that the Lord gives you solace and peace in the knowledge that this great and good man is now enjoying the eternal reward of a life well lived.
Sincerely,
William (Bill) Mitchell

I never met General Powell but did spend several hours with his wife, Alma. He brought intellect, compassion, and dignity to all that he did. A true American patriot and hero. May his memory be a blessing.
