Vern M. McKee passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. He was born in 1949 in Atlanta, Georgia. His early years were spent on a Nebraska farm near where his mother's relatives had been homesteaders since 1911. In later years the family moved to Casper, Wyoming where Vern graduated from Natrona County High School in 1967.
He married Lynn Howk, his high school sweetheart, in 1968. That same year Vern entered the military and served one tour of duty in Vietnam (1968-1969) as a SP5 in the 1st Air Calvary Division of the U.S. Army. He was a recipient of several distinguished medals of honor including the Bronze Star. His remaining military service years were spent in Germany.
Vern and Lynn moved to Durango, Colorado after military service where they raised their son, Mark. Vern graduated from Fort Lewis College with a Bachelor's degree in accounting. He was a self-employed tax accountant for 40 years, developing many meaningful and long-lasting friendships. His passions in life were watching his son play baseball, family camping, spending time with his grandkids, and was a voracious reader.
He is survived by his wife Lynn, son Mark and wife Vanessa, two grandchildren Lara and Zach, two brothers Dean and Fed, one sister, Alatia. He was a loyal friend, loved by many and will be missed.
A memorial service will be held and details will be published at a later date.
