Shawna Long was born Shawna Marie Scanlon on Halloween; strong and independent, full of spirit, and loving a little unruly mischief. Shawna moved to Colorado after her Kansas upbringing and graduation from the University of Kansas, her eye on the mountainous horizon, in search of her next adventure.
Shawna spent as much time in nature as she could, a very talented rock climber. She was an Outward Bound instructor, made snow at Purgatory, and raft guided through the rivers she adored.
She found the love of her life in a man named Mark Long, and they were blessed with a son - Jake. Although Mark passed soon after, Shawna's selfless character showed through as a devoted mother.
Her friends and family loved her, her compassion, and her incredible sense of humor. She went to impressive lengths for the sake of a joke.
Shawna Long passed away on 12/21/21 - fittingly the darkest day of the year. Her spirit remains rock climbing, swaying to her favorite music, and wherever there are wildflowers.
Memorial service details soon to come. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to La Plata County Humane Society. Lastly, we are seeking the perfect next home for Shawna's pets and welcome any leads (Mixed-breed dogs: Biscuit, 5, and Moki, 7. Cat: Crouton, 7. We intend to keep dogs together).

I just learned of Shawna's passing. I'm shocked. Remembering all the jokes we had working at the Herald. All the halloween costumes, a wonderful person. May be able to take the animals-need more info. [email protected]. I'll see you on the other side. [email protected]

I just learned of this sad news. I worked with Shawna at the Durango Herald where I was always impressed with her work ethic and sense of humor. Always a go getter and well liked. I also worked with her when she was the publisher for Travel Host Magazine, where again she was a delight to work with. My condolences to family and friends.
