Louis Myers Obituary

Louis "Lou" Robert Myers, 78, of Durango, Colorado passed away peacefully at his home on July 14, 2021. He was born in Raton, New Mexico on August 12, 1942, son of the late Robert Myers and late Mary Richards. In addition to his parents, Louis was preceded in death by his stepfather Ray Richards and his sister Mary Blasi.

Shortly after graduating from Trinidad High School in 1960, he enlisted in the military serving four years in the United States Navy as a Photographer's Mate. After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy, Louis enrolled at Trinidad State Junior College where he met Jolleen Seculo. Louis and Jolleen were married on October 10, 1964 and remained wedded until Louis's passing more than 56 years later.

Louis transferred from Trinidad State Junior College to Adams State University where he completed his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Secondary Education. In 1967 he began his teaching career as an English teacher at Trona Hight School in Trona, California. From there he taught at Riverton Community College in Riverton, Wyoming before moving to Durango, Colorado in 1970 to teach English at Durango High School.

Louis remained at Durango High School for the next 24 years until his retirement from teaching in 1992. While at DHS, in addition to teaching, Louis dedicated time to coaching at the school. Over his years there he was the head coach for girls varsity volleyball and DHS rodeo teams. He was also an assistant coach for DHS wrestling, football, and baseball teams. As his sons Shawn and Raymond became involved in sports, Louis carried his passion for coaching to the community by volunteering numerous hours coaching one of the local Babe Ruth youth baseball teams they were members of for several years.

Louis is survived by his wife, Jolleen, and his two sons, Shawn, his wife Jennifer; and Raymond, his wife Stephanie. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Sydney, Cameron, Wesley, and Jordan along with sisters-in-law Joyce Monter and Judy Rino and a number of nieces and nephews.

Louis' wishes were to be cremated and remains interred at Greenmount Cemetery where a graveside memorial service for family members was held at 4:30 pm, July 16, 2021.

A separate memorial service for friends of Louis Myers will be held on August 12, 2021. Details for this separate memorial service will be provided by Jolleen Myers at a later date.
