John (Jack) G. Wieting, 71, passed away peacefully on July 7th in Durango, CO. John was born December 21, 1947 to John H. Wieting and Ruth (Viereck) Wieting in Lakehurst, NJ. He graduated from East Greenwich High School in Rhode Island in 1966 and from Iowa Wesleyan University in 1971. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Marine Corps. He served 4 years of active duty and continued service to his country in the Reserves and retired as a Lt. Colonel. John was a career educator - he was a high school history teacher, basketball coach and high school basketball referee. He loved basketball! He loved any sport that involved a ball! John retired to Durango 14 years ago and pursued his other passions of cycling and skiing. A perfect day would be a century ride over a couple of mountain passes. He was a lifetime learner and a lifetime outdoor enthusiast. He lived an active life and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Mercy (Durango) or Durango Devo. John (Jack) Wieting

Jack was a great guy, we called a few B-Ball games together and always had a beer afterwards. Loved working with Jack, color blind and hard of hearing, but stood tall on the court. See him at Rec. Center and would always tell him I had a green shirt cause I loved teasing him. Rest in peace Jack

John was a fellow classmate at East Greenwich H.S. in Rhode Island. We played together the football field and basketball court and he excelled in both sports, especially the hard court. More importantly, he was a great friend, with a tremendous sense of humor. It was great to reconnect with him at our 50th reunion.

May he rest in peace.

From all the members of the Class of '66 in East Greenwich, RI - we send our heartfelt condolences to John's family and friends. He attended our 50th reunion three years ago and we were all so happy to see him after so many years. It was a great night. All of the athletes in our class had nicknames, usually concocted by my husband, and his was Wheatless! He was a great guy and wonderful athlete. May he rest in peace. Warm regards, Donna and Jim Bowen
