Alvin Duane Haddock of Bayfield, CO; known to family and friends as "Chap", passed away at his home on January 28, 2021 after a long battle with multiple myeloma. He was 79 years old.

Chap was born at home, North of Hooker, OK on March 19, 1941 to Randal and Ada Pearl (Marteney) Haddock. His family moved to Two Buttes, CO when he was about five years old where they farmed and raised cattle. There, he graduated from Two Buttes High School in 1959. He studied electronics at Lamar Junior College. He married Bessie Lee Gay on November 15, 1963. He was hired by the Colorado State Highway Department (CSHD), now called Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and moved to Granite, Colorado where Donna and Duane were born in Salida; and then moved to Twin Lakes, Colorado, where he also worked for CSHD. Many of his favorite stories are of plowing snow on Independence Pass, Civil Air Patrol, and climbing and descending Mount Elbert in about seven hours. He transferred to Bayfield in 1971, where he was a supervisor and maintained the state roads between Elmore Store and Piedra River until he retired because of a back injury. His hobbies included Amateur "HAM" radio operator (Snowdown Balloon Rally, Iron Horse bike race), irrigating, raking, plowing snow, beekeeping, electronics, and was a man who could fix anything or solve problems with common sense and telling many stories of family. He is known by many as someone who would take his time to explain a problem and was revered by everyone who met him.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie; children Donna Karp (Tim) of Bayfield, and Duane Haddock (MAJ, Ret. US Army) of Penrose, CO; four grandchildren, Tyrel Karp, Tabetha Napier (Mich), Elizabeth Haddock, and Emily Haddock; and two great-grandsons, Elijah and John. He is also survived by siblings, Neal of Ulysses, KS, Oma McKitrick of Pueblo West, CO, Leroy (Rose) of Two Buttes, CO, Becky (Gary) Prewett of Fort Collins, CO, Fred (Doris) of Pueblo, CO, Kenney of Two Buttes, CO; and many nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Tom, Ray, Ivan, and Delmar.

A graveside service will be at the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield, CO on Friday, February 5th at 1:00pm. A Celebration of Life will be planned later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Amateur Radio Club of Durango, (PO Box 2942, Durango, CO 81302)

Sorry to hear this. He and his lovely wife were always kind even when you could tell he was struggling and in pain. My heart goes out to the family especially Bessie. ❤
