Ray was one of the closest people to my heart for many, many years. He was like a Dad to me, and taught me everything from welding to auto mechanics, to hunting and panning for gold in the mountains around Durango. He always had a great sense of humor, and had a story to tell for every situation. He loved to talk about Jesus Christ, and about how he bowed his head and heart to him when he got saved. Ray was always ready to lend a hand to any friend or stranger who was in need, and his fearless enthusiasm for life was always so inspiring and contagious for everyone around him. As a father and grandfather, he was a kind and gentle leader, always encouraging his family that they could overcome any obstacle and reach any goals that they set their mind to. He always told people that he never met any strangers in his life, only friends he hadn't yet met. Ray will be missed by all of us, and I can't wait to meet him in Heaven. I know he's up there now picking the gold dust out in between the bricks of the streets, melting it down, and making gifts for his Savior and all his friends!

I visited Ray and Mabel a few years back and am glad to have seen them both. Ray was a family friend to the Averills who attended the same church in Durango. I recall his easy-going ways, joking with us about his pigs and other humor through the years. I'll always have fond memories of him when I was a kid and he was an enrichment to me in those years there.
