Sharon Carter Obituary

Former Durango resident, Sharon O'Meara Carter, 70, died peacefully surrounded by her immediate family on January 11, 2017, following a brief illness.

Born in Denver, Colorado. She was the daughter of Al O'Meara Jr. of O'Meara Ford Center. Mrs. Carter graduated from Christ The King Catholic School, St. Mary's Academy and attended both Colorado University and Denver University. In 1965, she married her high school sweetheart Van Dorn.

Sharon Carter was one of JF Images first models in the early 1960s and continued to model until she moved to Alamosa.

After her marriage to Raymond Carter in 1972, they moved to Alamosa to open Ray Carter Motor Company. Mrs. Carter was an Emeritus Board Member for Adams State University foundation. In 1981, she was awarded the prestigious Willis Fassett, Jr. Award given to individuals who have been strong supporters of the university.

In 1977 she and her mother Betty O'Meara founded Maison des Maisons, a miniature business offering a fine array of miniature dollhouse furnishings for the discerning collector to the enthusiastic novice. Both Sharon and her mother Betty served as members of the Board of Directors for The Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys. Sharon was also a member of the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts.

Mr. & Mrs. Carter moved to Durango in 1985 and opened Economy Nissan. While living in Durango she continued to contribute to the community by serving on the Fort Lewis College foundation. Throughout the years she was a very talented fundraiser and instrumental in starting the Southwest Safe House in 1985. She served two terms on the Durango Design Review Board. In 1995, she and her husband moved back to Denver.

Mrs. Carter had many hobbies and interests. She made beautiful jewelry, enjoyed horseback riding, dancing and playing cards with friends. She was both a Boy Scout Leader and a Girl Scout Leader. She was a gourmet chef and an accomplished seamstress. She was a member of the National Association of Sewing & Design Professionals and served as Treasurer of the local chapter on two occasions.

Mrs. Carter is survived by her two children Darren & Fallon Carter, sister Marilyn O'Meara Benedict, two brothers Brian and Stephen O'Meara, one grandchild and a granddog. Her husband Raymond L Carter preceded her in death on July 13, 2010.

There will be a memorial service at Wellshire Inn on Feburary 13, 2017, starts at 2pm, at 3333 S. Colorado Blvd. Denver, CO 80222. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Sharon's name to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation 60 East 56th Street, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10022.
