Michael James DeWitt, 65, of Sanibel, FL, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2019 in Sanibel. He was born to Charles and Barbara DeWitt on July 28, 1953. He grew up in Detroit, MI where he learned the value of hard work and the satisfaction of determining his own success.
Mike attended St. Gerard Grade School and graduated from Henry Ford High School in 1972. He then attended a carpentry apprenticeship program. He put the education he received there to good use when he supervised the construction of his office building and three of his homes.
It was in 1972 when Mike met Diane, a nursing student from a nearby neighborhood. They married six years later and enjoyed traveling, owning harness horses, and spending time at their vacation home in Caseville, MI. Mike began his career in the paving business as a salesman. Before long, he had started his own paving company and earned his retirement at the age of 48.
Mike lived out his dream of owning a ranch in southwest Colorado. For the next 15 years, he enjoyed working on his property, hunting, and fly fishing. He took a position with SkyWest Airlines in Durango and enjoyed the flight benefits that came with the job. However, nothing compared to his passion for playing pool. In July of 2017, Mike took First Place in the 8 Ball Senior Singles Gold Division at the BCA Pool League National Championship in Las Vegas, NV.
Of all of Mike's accomplishments, he treasured most his 40 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Diane, and being a father to their cherished son, Michael. His limitless love and devotion to them is their comfort now.
Mike is also survived by his brothers, Charley (Corine), John, Doug, and Tom (Bobbie); his sister, Lucy (Tom) Early, his brother in law, Gary Sudy, his sister in law, Gail (Tom) Gualdoni, and his dear sister in law, Patty Horne (Frank Lapasinskas).
He will also be remembered by his godchildren, Steven Horne, Dan Horne, and Laurie Adusky Nicolson; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
A Memorial Mass will take place at St. Isabel Catholic Church in Sanibel, FL.
Memorial Contributions in memory of Michael James DeWitt are suggested to Hope Hospice, 9470 Healthpark Cir., Fort Myers, FL 33908.

Oh yes! I remember Mike from Durango CO. One winter my car slid on a slippery road near his home in Bayfield. Mike drove up behind me and I was trapped in my car as the drivers side was on the slope trapping me inside. He stopped, hooked my car up and pulled me out, introduced himself, gave me is telephone number and told me, "Anytime you need help, give me a call", smiled that great smile, shook my hand and drove away. He didn´t know I was on my way to work and I worked at a nearby Quilt Shop with his beautiful, sweet wife, Diane. Loved those two. I had met an angel that day.

Sometimes in a lifetime we meet someone, a total stranger that touches your heart and extends their hand in helping you in times of distress.
This was Mike who drove up to help this old woman caught in a snow bank in Durango.
Not a word spoken, hooked up my car, pulled me out, introduced himself, gave me his name, phone number, which by the way, I still carry in my wallet to remind me of angels in my life.
That was Mike.

Ahh..Sweet Mike. He was always ready to help anyone in distress, always with that great smile of his. I will always remember him in his truck, pulling up beside my car stuck in a snow bank, total stranger, old lady, sadly looking at her stuck car and praying for an angel and by golly one did show up! Yes, it was Mike. A wonderful human being. One of God’s gift to humanity. ❤

I am so very sorry for your loss.
Mike and I were pool playing buddies, many a time he and I would play a game called one pocket.
He was a tough competitor and I would bet he fought it tough to the end.
Good bye dear friend,

My first encounter with my "Angel Mike" was on a snow packed back country road where my small SUV had slid into a ditch. I couldn't get out of my car on the driver's side so I had to crawl over the council on the passenger side. Totally "stuck". A big truck pulled up behind me and said, "looks as though you have a problem". Yep, I said.
He managed to get the car back on the road.
He then pulled out a piece of paper and wrote his name and phone number down and said, "I live close by, if you ever need help again, give me a call". I kept that note in my glove box for years. He truly was a "Gentle Man"
Then years later I met his wife Diane when we worked at the same Quilt Shop. She and I shared many stories about our home town of Detroit. True Michiganders. Mike will be sorely missed by all. And I know "This angel is in heaven"....
