Maria Anna Szabo Obituary
The heavens received another angel on November 16, 2018. Maria Anna Szabo passed away peacefully and surrounded by love at her daughter, Marian S. Townsend's home in Durango, Colorado.

She was born on March 7, 1938, to Mihaly & Anna Poloske of St. Lorintz, Hungary. Maria grew up on a pig farm with Black Italian Stallions.

Maria and Laszlo Szabo escaped from Budapest Hungary in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution and mass exodus from the Russian Regime. They were caught escaping and placed in a concentration camp in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. The two were married on August 23, 1957. The untimely death of her spouse, Laszlo in 1969 left her a widow for 49 years. She never re-married.

Maria worked in Dallas, Texas for Maynard Oil Company as a Senior Revenue Accountant, until her retirement in 2006.

Education was very important to her and one of her proudest achievements was raising her (3) children with all (3) graduating and receiving Bachelors Degrees.

Maria took her family back to Hungary every summer to visit relatives and have family reunions at their lake house in Balatonfured. We would meet up with our relatives from Sweden and Hungary.

As children, we learned to speak Hungarian fluently and became bi-lingual at a very early age.

Maria also spoke multiple languages and even knew a little bit of Russian.

She was very intelligent and would often comment that she was full of useless knowledge. She would discuss topics surrounding history, culture, and travel.

She was an excellent cook and would often make our favorite meals when going home to see her in Dallas. She enjoyed gardening and had beautiful houseplants, African Violets and potted flowers in her front courtyard. She loved animals and even though we grew up with only one cat, Cirmosh she took in many strays as her own. You could often see neighboring cats, possums, raccoons, squirrels, and birds in her courtyard.

As her loving daughter, if anyone would have asked me who I would like to meet, it was you, Mom.

You were fiercely loyal, independent, interesting, adventurous, well traveled, compassionate and very grateful to live in the best country in the world. Your sacrifices of leaving your home country so we could have a better life in America will never go unnoticed. You have taught us that no matter how difficult life can be persevere with gratitude, joy and happiness.

Maria Anna Szabo was preceded in death by her parents Mihaly & Anna Poloske of Budapest, Hungary. Her husband Laszlo Szabo and granddaughter Megan Elizabeth Szabo.

She is survived, loved and missed by her children Leslie Michael Szabo of Austin, Texas, Richard Victor and Penny Szabo of Austin, Texas. Tom and Marian Szabo Townsend of Durango, Colorado.

Grandchildren Vayle, Lydia, and Lance Townsend of Durango, Colorado. Matt Szabo of Fort Worth, Texas. Elizabeth Pires of Santa Rosa, California. Twin Brothers Mitya & Margaretha Poloske of Hisings-Baca Sweden and Lesci & Kati Poloske of Budapest, Hungary. Numerous nieces and nephews throughout Europe.

You will be loved and missed Forever!
