Charles Self Obituary

Charles Don Self passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017, at his home. He was 88 years old.

Charles was born March 12, 1928, to Howard C. and Florence M. (Rea) Self at the Self Ranch in Falfa, Colorado. He grew up in the Falfa and Durango area later retiring in Middle Mesa, NM. After graduating high school in Durango in 1946, he served in the U.S. Marines stationed in Hawaii. After World War II ended he was honorably discharged. Returning to Durango he went into business hauling coal and lumber in the Durango area. He went to work at Andrews garage as a mechanic that he later purchased. The business was renamed, Self Safety Service, located on 15th street and later moved to Florida Road. In the mid to late 60's he joined the fire department as a volunteer fireman which later became Fire Chief and was a Colorado Mounted Ranger for La Plata County. From 1969 to 1973 he was on Durango city council. During that time he was City Commissioner and later became Mayor. After closing Self Safety Service he worked for Helmur Corporation blading roads throughout the oil & gas field in the 4 corners area. He then went to work as a contractor for Bill Moss, owning his own road grader until he retired. Charles spent many happy hours fishing, camping and traveling with his family.

He is survived by his brother: Leroy Self, Sister: Rose Smith, Sons: Mike Self, Gregg Self, Mark (Self) Miller, and Clark (Self) Miller, Daughters: Charlene Self, Debbie Holiday and their spouses as well as 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his wife: Carolyn Self, and two siblings: Ivan Self and Elaine Palmer. Per his request a private family memorial service will be held at his home on 2-19-2017.

Charlie was a very admirable man who touched and affected many lives in the Durango community. I have known the Self family since the mid 70's and can truly say he was a prime example of a man who genuinely cared about the community of Durango. May his family find peace and comfort in his memory.
